Making Shorts From Long-Form
How to pull standalone moments from long videos and add running on-screen text so the Short works with the sound off.

You already made the long video. Somewhere inside it there are two or three moments that stand up on their own, and those are your Shorts. You're not writing anything new. You're mining what you've already got.
But a clip lifted out of a long-form video isn't a Short yet. It's raw material. And the single biggest thing standing between the two is text on screen.
Assume the sound is off. That's the default state of a Short, not the edge case. Somebody's scrolling in bed with the phone muted, or on a train, or at work pretending to look at something else entirely. Your voiceover is doing nothing for that person. And if the only place your information lives is in the audio, they're gone inside a second and they take your retention with them.
So overlay text that narrates what's actually happening. Not a title card at the front. Not a caption you stuck on because everyone does. Running text through the whole clip that carries the story by itself, so somebody who never unmutes still follows every beat of it and still gets the point at the end.
This matters more for repurposed clips than for anything you build as a Short from scratch, and the reason is worth understanding. Your long-form video was made for people who chose to listen. It leans on the narration. Everything load-bearing is in the voice, because that's the right way to make a ten-minute video. Lift sixty seconds of that out and drop it into a feed where nobody's listening, and it's silent. It looks like nothing is happening.
The fix is boring and it works. Go through the clip and put what's being said on screen, keyed to the moment it's said. If a number matters, the number goes up. If the story turns, the text turns with it.
Then watch it back muted. If you can follow it with the sound off, it's ready. If you can't, neither can they.
Muted is the test. Every time.
